Nationwide Building Society (NBS) is now the world’s largest mutual financial institution, the UK’s third largest mortgage lender, and one of the UK’s largest savings providers.

NBS has over 605 branches and 12 Admin Centres and 9 Regional Hubs around the country. As the property portfolio has grown and been refurbished, keeping accurate records of the property asset management information has presented quite a challenge.
Combining space data for all branches into a single system
In 2012, CADS was commissioned by NBS’ Property & Corporate Services Department to bring together the space data for all branches and office areas into a single system. This system needed to be easily updated, and aspects of the company’s property portfolio reported on for facility management (FM) purposes.
Managing data and drawings during the refurbishment programme
The business was also undertaking a lengthy refresh and refurbishment programme in the branches including a shift to hybrid working system in all of their admin offices.
Changes in the office format to an open plan environment allowed NBS to apply their flexible working ethos. Collaborative working areas were introduced for employees and space-saving opportunities in the buildings were identified.
Amending the NBS drawings and database to reflect these changes is now an ongoing task for the CADS Retail drawing team whilst the rolling refurbishment programme takes place.

Asset database linking to master CAD drawings
To address these issues, CADS’ developed their software asset database as the solution for NBS. The database contains all the relevant details of the property portfolio and is directly linked to the master CAD drawings. This enables the Business Services teams to make decisions and provide information when required.
Streamlined data for business services teams
Each building within the NBS estate now has its AutoCAD record linked to an online database called SpaceStation® asset database. The database in turn feeds into a central system hub of FM data providing an integrated repository for all branch and admin site-related information.
Data can be accessed from the CADS document controller by the relevant people within the organisation when they need information quickly e.g. to see what the different branches look like and what facilities they contain.

Alongside managing the property asset data, CADS supports NBS with information to assist their space planning decisions . We deliver bespoke reports and respond quickly to queries across Nationwide’s branch and office estate. This collaborative approach positions CADS as a trusted extension of Nationwide’s Business Services team.
These requests can range from calculating the total number of desks per department, total usable areas within the admin centres to how many counters are in each branch.
